AI and NMT are only two of the most recent acronyms that will soon become part of our daily lives. However, we should not forget that they are tools in the hand of people, the same people who run companies in need of translation services or who are translators themselves. And those people still prefer to meet people rather than machines. Trade fairs are still a great example, as well as peer revision since no machine is (yet) able to fully replace a person. We need to exploit this gap and make sure potential customers and colleagues understand this too.
\nChiara Vecchi<\/strong> is an English and German into Italian translator specialised in beauty & cosmetics, marketing, medicine, and travel & tourism. Now based in Italy, she has studied and worked in the UK and Germany. The world is changing by leaps and bounds. We see transformations in different environments, such as the work environment, the professional environment, and in in processes such as elaboration and production, and the process concerning translation is also affected by these changes.
\nThis presentation is an invitation to reflect on how the translation process has evolved, from glossarism or simple word-for-word translation where the context was not taken into account, to translation in our days, when AI has created a new paradigm in this field when trying to imitate human translation. We will mention the characteristics of the AI systems, the systematic and the neural one, their advantages and limitations in the field of translation.
\nMainly, it is an invitation to reflect on the translator\\'s work: how has our work changed in all these years? How do we approach a translation work? We will discuss the importance of critical thinking and the characteristics of the critical thinker as fundamental skill and added value when translating. The importance of post-editing today. Post-editing as a valid job offer.
\nAnd finally, we will try to answer the following question: Human translation vs. Automatic Translation. who is the winner? \\\"And the winner is... In fact, is there a winner? Let\\'s look into it and decide!<\/p>\n

The talk will focus on the issues that have come up for translators and interpreters at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, such as (to name a few): how the fact that the trials are being translated shapes them; the handling of disputes over terminology in the courtroom; how to translate derogatory, offensive language; the translation and interpreting issues that have had an impact on judgements.<\/p>\n

Ellen Elias-Bursac<\/strong> has translated over twenty-five novels and books of non-fiction by Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian writers. ALTA\\'s National Translation Award was given to her translation of David Albahari\\'s novel G\u00f6tz and Meyer in 2006 and she received the AWSS Mary Zirin Prize in 2015. She has also written and contributed to books and articles on translation studies and South Slavic language instruction, including Translating Evidence and Interpreting Testimony at a War Crimes Tribunal: Working in a Tug-of-War. She is the interim president of the American Literary Translators Association.<\/p>\n

Changes in payment practices \u2013 how court-certified translators in France have handled it since Covid.<\/p>\n

Court-certified translators in France, also known as sworn translators (traducteurs asserment\u00e9s), are freelance legal translators who work for a variety of clients ranging from courts, to lawyers, notaries, companies in all industries and natural persons located in France or overseas.<\/p>\n

Certified translation procedures have been simplified since Covid started, including the decreasing need for physical meetings and physical signatures, and certified true copies or photocopies have gradually replaced original documents.<\/p>\n

As for payment practices, certified translators have had to adapt their strategies to ensure cash-flow while dealing with struggling companies, remotely working courts, and changing needs from natural persons.<\/p>\n

This presentation will discuss the new payment terms and conditions many translators have implemented, and how Covid brought in the best practices court-certified translators have known in years.<\/p>\n

Grace Shalhoub<\/strong> is a legal translator and university lecturer based in Paris, France.<\/p>\n

After working as a staff translator for an international engineering firm, she started a new chapter as a freelance translator specializing in technical and legal translation.<\/p>\n

In Dec. 2016, she took the oath and was accredited by the Paris Court of Appeal for Hebrew-English-French languages and has been since exploring the challenges of multilingual legalese.<\/p>\n

Today, AI and NMT are needed to accelerate our daily job as translators to comply with the fast requirements of our clients. As professional translators, we have to respond to these challenges in a timely and responsible manner by identifying and managing the security risks of the assets involved in the process.<\/p>\n

ISO 27001 provides the framework to manage information security. Creating a list of necessary protective measures depends largely on your specific needs. The greater the value of the assets involved, the greater the steps that should be taken to protect them.<\/p>\n

In this lecture, you will find the right solution to safely embrace NMT and AI in your profession.<\/p>\n

Gabriela Escarr\u00e1<\/strong> holds two university degrees: Certified Sworn Translator (University of La Plata) and English and Literature Teacher (University of La Plata). She is an ISO 27001 Internal Auditor (Bureau Veritas). She holds a degree from Fundaci\u00f3n Litterae as a Copyeditor and two certifications in Post-editing and Transcreation from the Translation Automation User Society. She has been lecturing on Quality Management, International Quality Standards and Post-Editing in Europe, the United States, and South and Central America, including several virtual conferences. Gabriela has actively participated at IRAM (ISO representative in Argentina) in the adoption and adaptation of some standards related to Language and Terminology (ISO TC37), and Information Security Systems. She is a member of ASTM Technical Committee F43 on Language Services and Products as well as a member of the ATA Standards Committee.<\/p>\n

Dolores R. Gui\u00f1az\u00fa<\/strong> is a certified sworn (court-approved) translator. She holds an MBA in marketing management (Universidad del Salvador & Albany University - State University of New York) and is a certified International Copyeditor. She has two certifications from the Translation Automation User Society in post-editing and transcreation. She specializes in marketing and quality management. Dolores is a member of ASTM (TC F43 on Language Services and Products) and the ATA Standards Committee. She is ISO 27001:2013 Internal Auditor by Bureau Veritas and is an active member of IRAM (ISO member body) on Translation & Interpreting and Security Issues in Argentina. What other hardware and software can be used to enhance our productivity and improve our health? In this presentation, we will explore the answers to these questions and will encourage attendees to take stock of what they already have and what they may want to add to their workstations.<\/p>\n

Nora D\u00edaz<\/strong> is an English-Spanish translator and conference interpreter who enjoys using technology and finding ways to increase productivity, which combined with her love of teaching, has led her to share what she has learned through a blog, articles, webinars and workshops. Nora is a certified RWS trainer and currently serves on the board of the Organizaci\u00f3n Mexicana de Traductores and is the Chair of the American Translators Association Professional Development Committee. She is also one of the co-organizers of the Innovation in Translation Summit and the Innovation in Interpreting Summit. She has recently co-authored a book called The Translator\u2019s Tool Box.<\/p>\n

We want to work with agencies in the United States. Yet, to make a good deal, we need to understand the language of contracts, which is very precise and involves very distinct elements. Let\u2019s learn the essential elements of contracts to understand them better. We will analyze four main characteristics of contracts: offer, capacity, consideration, and acceptance. We will talk about the importance of jurisdiction and governing law. We will see sample clauses and discuss using that knowledge to build a freelance translation or interpretation contract that works for us. So, let\u2019s make sure we write the fine print!<\/p>\n

Andy Benzo<\/strong> has Law and Translation Degrees from her native Argentina. She has worked as a freelance Legal Translator for over 30 years. She joined the ATA in 1999 and is ATA-certified. She is the Past Assistant Administration of the Spanish Division of the ATA and has hosted the SPD podcast \u201cCharlas de caf\u00e9\u201d for two years. Furthermore, she is now a Board Member of the American Translation Association.
\nShe was an instructor in the Translation and Interpretation Certificate Program at UCSD Extension for many years. She taught several courses, including Legal and Business Translation and Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation. Andy was a founder of ATISDA (Association of Translators and Interpreters in the San Diego Area), serving as its President for six years. Past Chair of the Bylaws and Governance Committee of NAJIT (National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators.) Continuing her studies in the US, she obtained a Paralegal Degree from California State, San Marcos.
