Session Description:
This session will explore frequent challenges faced by literary translators. Literary translators must capture tone, voice, rhythm, dramatic structure, themes, rhetoric, and historical context to effectively introduce new readers to a work of literature. Often, linguistic rules cannot be strictly applied. Real-world and theoretical examples will be used to illustrate when and how to make interpretive decisions and how to maneuver within a spectrum of choice that has fuzzy borders.

Petra Caroline Rieker, is an accomplished freelance journalist and published
translator of six works of fiction and translation reference. Specializing in
English > German, she is the owner of The Art of German Language, a
translation and tutoring practice, and publisher of a blog which explores the
nuance of translating creative works

the Board of Directors for the Delaware Valley Translators Association, a
chapter of ATA. She holds a Major in Business Administration from the Otto-
Friedrich University in Bamberg, Germany and is a certified Public Relations

Translation services have become increasingly sophisticated and more technological over the years.
ISO Standards are great resources to cope with this evolution and, at the same time,
to offer quality services. However, ISO standards of best translation practice are not well-known and applied by many linguists. This session will give an overview of translation industry standards that can help translators follow recommended processes and differentiate themselves when providing their services.

Dolores and Gabriela are Sworn Certified Translators who work for agencies and direct clients all over the world. They have been lecturing on Quality Management and Standards in the US (the ATA62 Annual Conference in Minneapolis 2021, the University of Massachusetts in Boston, the 58th ATA Annual Conference in Washington, DC, the Florida International University in Miami), Europe (the BP18 Conference in Vienna), and Latin America (the 5th International Conference of Copyeditors in Colonia, Uruguay), among others.

Writing translation content posts – the why and how

Stephen Rifkind will present the marketing advantages of producing content articles and provide tips on producing and publishing informational posts.

Stephen Rifkind has been a translator for some 15 years, working from Hebrew, French and Russian into English. both American and British. He specializes in legal and financial material as well as official documents. He is half American, half French and has lived in Israel for some 30 years. His education is eclectic: BA in Russian Studies from UC Santa Cruz, went to law school at the University of Oregon, teaching credentials in French from Portland State College and an MBA from Leicester University in the UK. He also has been teaching English at the Braude School for Engineering in Israel for 25 years. He says “I have the privilege and curse of being able to live in three different countries without belonging 100% to any of them.”

For the translation market to grow and thrive, we must do more than just defend the status quo, seek visibility, manage technology and remain competitive. We must all come together,  translation company owners, freelancers, subcontractors, salaried translators, students, and work proactively to position translation in a coordinated and compelling way as a crucial, engaging profession. This talk offers effective and far-reaching solutions, from a Canadian perspective, that decisionmakers at all levels of the language industry can implement to encourage a change in perspective, introduce an innovative vision, foster reverse networking and lay the professional groundwork for an updated value proposition for clients nationally and abroad.

Dominique Bohbot, Head of professional training at University of Montreal, Department of linguistics and translation is a certified translator, certified writer, certified editor and certified trainer. She has worked as a manager, linguistic services at TMX Group (Toronto Stock Exchange and affiliated companies), where she led the successful integration of translation services as the financial terminology hub in Canada, which made her group finalist of the 2014 French awards of the Office Québécois la langue française. During three terms, she has chaired the Association of Linguistic Services Managers, which awarded her the distinction of honorary member; she currently chairs its Committee for the promotion of Canadian language services. One of her major appearances occurred in 2017 at the Canadian House of Commons, where she stood and talked for the promotion of translation. Engaged in professional best practices, she has brought her expertise to Editors Canada for their French certification program. In 2018, she was awarded the Merit Award of the Quebec order of certified translators, terminologists and interpreters for her outstanding contribution to the recognition of professional translation. As a sought after expert, she regularly talks as a guest speaker on several forums and conferences in Canada, the US, Europe and Latin America.

Technology, digital tools, and machine learning are profoundly impacting multilingual communication and reshaping language transfer processes. Information and communication technologies enable novel interaction patterns, thus redefining the industry of language services with the rising relevance of language data and assisting engines. Multilingual natural language processing and computational linguistics are among the driving areas of the ongoing artificial intelligence revolution. Besides, the latest advancements in automatic speech recognition and spoken translation may push the boundaries of new ‘augmented’ use cases. This lecture will offer an overview of the current landscape in interpreting technology and envisage potential paths for forthcoming scenarios. submitter_bio: Francesco Saina is an Italian linguist working with English, French, and Spanish. He is a specialized translator in the fields of medicine and audiovisuals, and an interpreter for institutions and businesses. He is also a university professor of translation, interpreting, and language technology at SSML Carlo Bo and SSML San Domenico in Rome, Italy. His research activity focuses on computer-assisted translation and interpreting, applied linguistics, innovation, and training—at the intersection of theoretical investigation, professional practice, and instructional implementations.
